The Valley Hospital and Waldwick Girl Scouts Host 'Women in Medicine'

WALDWICK, N.J. -- The Valley Hospital, in conjunction with the Waldwick Girl Scouts, recently hosted a “Women in Medicine” evening at Waldwick High School. The evening provided female students at the high school with the opportunity to learn about careers in medicine with a focus on the operating room.

The event showcased the experience of a patient, played by one of the Girl Scouts, in the operating room from registration through recovery. The girls were able to view pictures of the operating room display and were shown how to set up a sterile table for surgery using a donated sterile pack and instrument tray. To enhance the experience, the girls were able to try using expired catheters, wires, balloons and stents.

Additionally, the event included presentations by organizer Wendy Church, Neuro Vascular Interventional Lab (NVIL) Registered Technician; Donna Lagasi, Director, Perioperative Services; Gail Burke, Business Associate, Operating Room; Candace Ruitenberg, Perioperative Cardiac Registered Nurse; Jane York, Anesthesia Technologist; Tracy Myack, Registered Nurse, Operating Room; Susan Michalski, Surgical Technician; Mitul Patel, M.D., Vascular Surgeon; Anne Foran, CSS NVIL Team; Linda Tenkate, NVIL Registered Nurse; Todd Frederick, NVIL Registered Technologist; and Robert Gottschalk, NVIL Registered Technologist.
