OAKLAND, N.J. -- When Sandy Khabbazeh, a Syrian native studying at Rutgers University, said a prayer at Ponds Reformed Church in Oakland little did she know it would lead to a new life under church members' wings, reports NorthJersey.com.
While most of her blood relatives are back in war-torn Syria, Khabbazeh, a Catholic who escaped in 2014, has found new connections at the Oakland Protestant church. She's lived with members, including the Rev. Nathan Busker's family, and become active in the church, too, NorthJersey.com says.
As people and politicians nationwide continue to debate the safety of offering sanctuary for Syrian refugees, members of Ponds Reformed Church say they are doing what Christ would do. They've even hosted a forum on the issue, and talked to other churches about forming a coalition to help, reports NorthJersey.com.
