Barbara Ann Yates, 81, Oakland Resident

OAKLAND, N.J. -- Barbara Ann Yates, of Oakland, died on Tuesday, Feb. 14. She was 81.

Born in Easton, Pennsylvania, Yates earned a degree in art education from Kutztown University. She was an accomplished art teacher in the Easton and Phillipsburg public schools, information from the funeral home noted. She also taught at the Easton Head Start Program.

She moved Oakland in 1971. "She was also an enthusiastic Sunday school teacher at the Ponds Reformed Church and an active member of the Juvenile Conference Committee," the funeral home added. 

"Her children remember her as a kind, patient and driven mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals." Yates also enjoyed quilting, shopping and cooking.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jason Everett Yates; children Jason Yates and Christina Yates-Takacs; daughter-in-law Diane Yates; grandchildren Jason Yates, Cassidy Takacs and Kayla Takacs; and great-grandson Trevor Yates.

Yates was preceded by her parents, Ruth and George Lutz.

A viewing and service will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Rd., in Oakland. Reverend Nathan Busker will officiate.
