A professional engineer, Eiden had been the manager of Sustainable Design for the NYC School Construction Authority since 2008. Before that, he was president and owner of Richard Eiden Associates and Garden State Controls in West Paterson, then vice president of DVL Consulting Engineers.
Eiden also was a part-time professor at the New York University School of Continuing Education and at Fairleigh Dickenson University. A former president of the NYC chapter of ASHRAE, he was very active in many organizations, including the U.S. Green Building Council and the Association of Energy Engineers.
He also was an avid photographer and singer, and a member of the New Jersey Choral Society for many years. He loved traveling with his wife, and the society provided many opportunities to sing around the globe. He was a member of the Advent Lutheran Church in Wyckoff, and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Eiden is survived by his wife, Jody; daughters Patricia Eiden of Chicago, and Julie Pantello and her husband Drew of Wyckoff; grandchildren Savannah Van Rensburg, George Pantello and Kate Pantello; sisters Janice Steeves and Virginia Ciavarella; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Karin Eiden.
Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Advent Lutheran Church, 777 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff.
