OAKLAND, N.J. — Amelia Lombardo-Reischel of Oakland comes from a family of leaders.
The 9-year-old's father, Don Lombardo, was police chief for 25 years. Her grandfather was a judge in the borough and the Hackensack courthouse. Her uncle was the fire chief.
Amelia, who has special needs and is wheelchair bound, was among the dozens of Bergen County youth who were able to serve as "Chief for a Day" on Friday.
She was sworn in at headquarters in a customized uniform and rode around in police cars with Chief Edward Kasper — it was the real deal.
And her mom, Tara Reischel, a fourth grade teacher in Oakland, says it was the highest honor for her family.
"To get this was a nice family honor that she's in a long line of chiefs," said her mom, Tara Reischel, a fourth grade teacher in Oakland.
"Now, she gets to be one today."
