Two fatal Christmas Eve crashes, minutes apart, in Bergen

Just before 5:30 tonight, two cars collided at the intersection of Colonial Road and McCoy Road.

Laurence Sephton, 50, of Roth Avenue in Franklin Lakes was pronounced dead after investigators pulled him from behind the wheel of his 1997 Cadillac, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

The driver of the other car, 20-year-old Ohannes Iskahanian of Oakland — who was behind the wheel of a 2009 Nissan Ultima — was rushed into surgery at a nearby hospital for internal injuries, the prosecutor reported.

Englewood hit-and-run killer at large, your help needed

A 57-year-old physician was killed by a hit-and-run driver on his way to synogogue services near his home in Englewood on Christmas Eve, and police are looking for a light-colored (possibly white or tan) SUV or wagon with significant front-end damage — only one front light, damage to the light housing and turn signal and possibly hood dents or windshield cracks, authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. Sephton was  making a left from McCoy Road onto Colonial Road at a stop sign when the sedan driven by Iskahanian — who investigators said had the right of way — t-boned Septhon’s car on the driver’s side.

“That intersection is extremely dangerous because you cannot see the cars coming over the hill to the left on Colonial Road until they are right on top of you,” said neighbor Sandy Cairns. “An accident like this was bound to happen sometime.

“God bless the family and the victim.”
