MAHWAH, N.J. -- A massive tractor-trailer fire closed southbound Route 287 in Oakland just before 4 p.m. Thursday.

"Truck driver is safely out of the cab and fortunately no one was injured," New Jersey State Police said in a statement.

However, "traffic is currently being diverted off exit 58 [in Oakland]," they said just before 5 p.m. "Expect extended delays and plan alternate routes.

Passersby posted videos and photos said as the tractor pulling the Target trailer leaked fuel onto the highway.

Motorists and nearby residents reported hearing explosions.

Several area fire companies responded.
