MAHWAH, N.J. – New Jersey residents pay the highest property taxes in the U.S., but the burden may hurt less in some municipalities – such as Mahwah and West Milford -- than others, NJ.com reports .

The publication compared property taxes to median household income to derive the municipalities in each county where property taxes “hurt the least.”

“The smaller bite the property taxes take from your household income, the less it hurts,” the story says.

Here are the municipalities in Bergen and Passaic that made the list, according to NJ.com.

Bergen:

  • Mahwah: The $8,285 average property tax bill is 7.7 percent of the $107,336 median income.
  • East Rutherford: The $6,158 average property tax bill is 7.8 percent of the $78,680 median income.
  • Edgewater: The $8,183 average property tax bill is 8 percent of the $101,767 median income

Passaic:

  • West Milford: The $9,076 average property tax bill is 9.2 percent of the $98,556 median income.
  • Wanaque: The $8,392 average property tax bill is 9.5 percent of the $88,125 median income.
  • Ringwood: The $10,912 average property tax bill is 10 percent of the $108,638 median income.
