Paramus Catholic Grad Peppers Taken By Browns In NFL Draft's First Round

PARAMUS, N.J. -- Former Paramus Catholic star Jabrill Peppers was selected 25th in the first round of the NFL Draft in Philadelphia late Thursday by the Cleveland Browns.

One of the most versatile players in the entire draft, the 5-foot-11, 213-pound Peppers can play defensive back, be a return specialist and possibly line up at linebacker.

He was a two-time first-team All Big Team player, as well as an All American last year -- and captured the Paul Hornung Award as college football's most versatile player.

Peppers also was a Heisman Trophy finalist and Lott Trophy winner after leading the University of Michigan last season with 63 tackles -- 47 of them solo.

There was some concern over how high the Wolverines' defensive standout might be drafted after the NFL notified its teams that he had tested positive for what's known as a dilute sample during the league combines in Indianapolis in March.

But just around 11 p.m., Cleveland announced its second choice of the first round.

The Browns, who finished the 2016 season with a 1-15 record, selected defensive end Myles Garrett from Texas A&M with the very first pick of the draft.

The team then traded the No. 12 pick Thursday night to the Houston Texans -- who used it to select Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson -- in exchange for No. 25.

The New York Giants selected rangy University of Mississippi tight end Evan Engram, while the Jets chose LSU safety Jamal Adams, the son of former Giants running back George Adams, with the sixth overall pick.
